2008 was not the most exciting of glasspoeme's three years as a photoblog. Other creative projects moved to the forefront and I just wan't as active with the cameras. As some of you may know, my first collection of poetry will be published by Mansfield Press in Fall 2009/Spring 2010 and that has taken up a lot of my time and creative energies. Some of these shots, though, remain amongst my all-time faves here on glasspoeme. There's more black & white represented in the year-end review than in past years. A resolution for 2010 (along with skipping out of work one Wednesday a month to go to the movies) is to be more active wih shooting and posting. All of these were shot with the Canon EOS 20D. Enjoy.

Shot in a deep fog in a orchard on the shores of Lake Erie in southern Essex County on Boxing Day 2007. I was using my brand new Canon EF 50mm lens and super high ISO because of the very low light, giving the photos this really noisy, cloth-like feel. Despite the gloom, the half hour I spent alone wandering in the orchard before a Boxign Day turkey feast were amongst my favourite of the entire Christmas holiday.

Two really noisy photos taken from behind the sound board at a Christmas concert. They were shot at the highest ISO the camera will allow. The curtain is Lynchian, to say the least.

OK, it's not really a rat's nest, it's a guy installing Christmas lights on a roof in LaSalle. He works for a landscaping company that bought into a Christmas decorating franchise to fill up their off-seasons. The decoartions are proprietary. For the basic job, it's $1,000--and you don't get to keep the decorations. There are homes being decorated for upwards of $5,000 in this neighbourhood. No commentary.

Henry's Cameras opened on Howard Avenue in Windsor today. I've already gone in and picked out a 50mm lens that's going on my Christmas list. I miss having a fixed 50mm.

I wish I could explain what's going on in this shot. I wish I could blame this 27-day hiatus on trying to figure it out, but the shot is only about five days old. I took this one at a citizenship ceremony I was covering. Forty-five new Canadians were sworn in that day. This is a shot of a dance number that was part of the ceremony. My best attempt at explaining it is that the camera managed to catch the image of the girl's face as it appeared for a fraction of a second, projected on the sheer red cloth she was dancing with. The cloth, in effect, is acting as a flowing mirror.

Once thought to grow primarily in the Golden Horseshoe and off in an northeasterly arc towards Peterborough and Ottawa, the Jimson weed recently turned up in Essex County and sent two youths to the hospital, one of who remained there for about 72 hours, babbling incoherently and in need of continuous sedation due to the terrifying severity of his hallucinations.

A rule of thumb I observe very strictly as a photographer is 'don't sneak up on elderly Eastern European women while they're working at their stills in a darkened autumn alley.' I had to drive down the alley last night to get the parking on the right side of the street and came across this woman processing several bushels of apples in her garage. I reached into the back seat, grabbed my camera and circled back around. I tried to be as nonchalant as possible about driving 3km/h by the blazing orifice of her booze works, but she was wary. I snuck a photo while in motion, but it didn's say what I wanted it to say. I went for a second lap of the block, bent on a second, and if possible, slower pass. This time she was waiting for me. We made eye contact. Had I not been nearly certain that she was packing an old timey blunderbuss for just such and occassion under her house dress, I would have asked her if I could capture this early, harvest-time phase of the undergroudn distillery trade--I didn't even attempt a shot this second time. I drove out onto the cross street and doubled back on foot. From about 200 feet away, I was able to get this shot using my 300mm lens. The low light noise,the angle--all of it adds up to disappointment. But I will try again. I may have to sneak through some neighbouring backyards to get the shot, but, clearly, privacy and ethics are not cheif amongst my concerns.

Tornado Warning: Ann Arbor Arts Fair

Without a doubt one of the freakiest storms I've ever been involved with. This menacing cell came racing over downtown Ann Arbor on Thursday, July 20 at about 3:30 p.m. while thousands of people packed the streets for the Arts Fair. I was standing in Shaman Drum books with Paul A. Toth when one of the staffers got a phone call that there was a tornado warning--not a tornado watch, but a warning, meaning tornadic activity is imminent. An announcement was made and a subdued strain of panic washed through the crowd. No one flipped out that I saw, but you could see the fear in the eyes and on the faces of families with young children, people with dogs, the elderly and people with large, expensive art purchases as they began hauling ass back to their cars and shuttle bus pick-up spots. They didn't move quick enough as about two minutes later, the wind picked up and sent debris, hats, umbrellas, offical Arts Fair banners and several vendor booths rolling down the street. Watching the skies, there were a few areas of cloud rotation, but no funnel clouds and no hail--the unmistakable harbingers of tornadoes. It was one of the fastest moving fronts I've ever seen. Within minutes, its leading edge was several kilometres south of downtown and fairgoers were already back purusing stalls, the vendors once again open for business, a cool breeze having replaced the intense humidity and stillness. A major disappointment.

Had the pleasure and privilege tonight of attending the opening of Jackie Fitzgerald's Expecting at Common Ground. With 10,000 plastic babies glued onto everything from Oriental shadow box art to a pack of Lucky Strikes (including a hand gun), the show was, in a word, relentless. The turnout was great, the food was outstanding and the music, complete with maternal heartbeat machines, was tripped out. Expecting runs until July 25.

I bought the work of art the card in the shot corresponds to. I'm withholding that to build up some much needed delayed gratification on glasspoeme.

I passed this in the car only twice before I made of point of coming back with my camera. Although this storefront, the former Newlife Upholstery at the corner of Lincoln Road and Cataraqui Street has remained in a delightfully chaotic state for most of my adult life, I didn't trust it not to be there upon my return.

My boys on some freaky ride at Colasanti's Tropical Gardens this past February. I like this shot, but this film is not worth it, and it's not even expensive. It's C-41 lab process film and I thought I'd give it a shot before I had my darkroom set-up. The results were a crapshoot. If it's going to be a crapshoot, I'd prefer that it was somehow my raw incompetence that made it such, not the roll in the camera.

Another photo taken by my father. This one, circa 1979, on a ski lift scaling Mont Tremblant, Quebec. I've been going through boxes of old family photos. I remember this shot--it fascinated me as a child. The ominous purple sky, the freakish corpuscular whiteness of the trees. My parents talked about this particular trip often--the depth of the snow, the spectacular storms, the scenery.

The photos itself is a 5 x 3.5 on Kodak paper with rounded corners. It's not in great shape. The whiteness of the trees has yellowed significantly (it may never have been a very good white) and, as can be seen, there are lots of scratches and fingerprints. But I rather like the "found photo" look. Like something from a Pavement or Califone album sleeve.
